Henrico Businesses and Educators Honored at 2015 RichTech Awards

On May 13, nearly 800 attendees gathered to recognize the community leaders, employees and educators who are driving our region’s technology-based economy – many of them representing initiatives and businesses in Henrico County. The Richmond Technology Council’s annual RichTech awards gala has been called the “Academy Awards of Technology,” and the event celebrates the advancements and achievements of technologists in the Central Virginia region.

Robby Demeria, Executive Director of the Richmond Technology Council, spoke about the importance of the event. “Much has changed during the last two decades, but our region continues to sprout innovators and entrepreneurs,” said Demeria. “It’s because of these finalists tonight that Central Virginia continues to attract new businesses. Our area has become a desired location for young technologists to live, work and play.”

Tom Cricchi, CEO of Henrico-based SyCom Technologies and member of the RichTech Board of Directors, agreed. “The RichTech Awards gala is so important for our local technology community because by bringing us together under one roof, we can all truly appreciate the breadth and depth of the IT talent in this region. The mix of vendors, integrators, startups, non-profits, investors, Fortune 1000s and public and private sector employers is energizing and gets the creative juices flowing on new ideas to drive success.”

Henrico County was represented in some way in almost category of nomination, including the Innovation in Education category, in which educators from Deep Run and Godwin high schools were recognized for their exceptional leadership in the field of technology.

Earl Henry Hurlburt II, of Mills E. Godwin High School, was nominated for his work tutoring students before and after school, assisting with college applications and letters of recommendation, and being the lead mentor on Godwin’s FIRST Robotics Team.

“I put my students first and try to develop engaging, dynamic projects that encourage them to apply what they learn in my class or their other classes,” said Hurlburt. “I try to learn as much from them as they do from me – constantly evolving and staying on top of the latest technologies that they should know and understand. My main teaching philosophy is not to teach them CAD, math or technology education – but to teach them how to use and apply those tools and concepts to real-world scenarios.”

Innovation in Education Award winner Lynne M. Norris, of Deep Run High School, said, “I am honored to be a finalist for the Innovation in Education award. RichTech’s Women in Technology group has had a direct impact in encouraging young women to enter and stay in computer science. Female enrollment for the incoming freshman class at the Center for Information Technology at Deep Run High School is 41 percent, which is significantly above the national average.”

Henrico-based direct marketing firm and Inc. 5000 company Taradel, LLC, was nominated as an Innovation in Technology Builder for a project completed for Canada Post. Taradel Founder and CEO Jim Fitzgerald explained, “We developed a website where business visitors to the Canada Post site could target an audience, select a professionally designed template and complete a direct mail project in under five minutes. They call this new service Snap Admail. We are very proud of the project, and although it has only been running for six months, it has a run rate of over $1,000,000 in annual sales.”

Fitzgerald added, “RichTech has done a tremendous amount of good in the Richmond area, and I’m very proud to be recognized by this organization. The other nominees in our category are all very well respected companies who have made powerful innovations on their own. It’s an honor to be associated with them.”

We would like to extend a special congratulations to all of the 2015 RichTech Award winners!
